Emergency
and Warning Signals
The civil defense siren is used for several purposes: it is
the noon whistle. Each time a call is made to the fire department
the siren is blown to notify the rest of the department that
help is needed. If an emergency or rescue call is received
the whistle blows similar to the noon whistle. If a fire call
is received, the siren makes an oscillating sound. The siren
also is used to notify the general public of either a tornado
or civil defense emergency. A tornado warning is a solid blast
for three minutes. A civil defense emergency warning is a
solid blast for five minutes.
